UCM launches new Uniformed Protective Services course

University College Isle of Man (UCM) is introducing a new qualification in Uniformed Protective Services, giving students the opportunity to explore careers in the protective services while developing valuable skills for their future.

The new BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate course replaces UCM’s previous Psychology offering and is designed for learners interested in working in areas such as the police, fire and rescue services, the armed forces, prison service and other uniformed and protective service roles.  The course will be taught alongside the Level 3 Forensics course which means learners will attain a qualification that is equivalent to three A-Levels and carriers up to 168 UCAS points.

Protective Services prepares students for progression into the police, fire and rescue, armed forces, prison and border services and other public-service careers. The Level 3 programme can also provide progression to higher education in areas such as policing, criminology, law and public services. This complements the criminology and science knowledge and skills that learners gain on the Level 3 Forensics course whilst also extending progression opportunities.

The two-year course combines classroom learning with practical experiences, helping learners to understand the responsibilities and expectations of working within uniformed protective services.

In their first year, students will study Behaviour and Discipline in the Uniformed Protective Services, exploring the standards, behaviours and discipline expected within the sector. They will also develop Expedition Skills, giving them the opportunity to put their learning into practice through practical activities.

In the second year, learners will study Teamwork, Leadership and Communication in the Uniformed Services, developing their ability to work effectively with others and understand the importance of leadership and communication in protective service environments. They will also complete Professional Development, helping them to prepare for their next steps.

More information is available on the UCM website, as well as at the upcoming open evening on Thursday 19th November at 4pm – 7pm.
